FoodCycler Pilot Program

Are you interested in joining the Municipality in tackling food waste? The RM of Taché and Food Cycle Science is excited to announce the FoodCycler Food Waste Diversion Pilot Program.

The FoodCycler Pilot Program's purpose is to measure the viability of on-site food waste processing technology as a method of waste diversion. Did you know that up to 50% of household waste, is composed of food waste? By reducing food waste at home, you can support your municipality in the their environmental goals, reduce your household's carbon footprint and extend the life of your community's local landfill.

What is a FoodCycler™ ?

By utilizing cutting-edge technology, a FoodCycler™  can transform organic waste into a soil amendment right in our own homes. The end product claims to be free from bacteria and weed seeds and food-borne pathogens are eliminated in the process. Each "cycle" of composting in the FoodCycler™  takes approximately 4 to 8 hours and uses only 0.8 to 1.3 kWh of electricity. Each FoodCycler™ is estimated to divert at least 2 tonnes of food over its expected lifetime.

What are the Benefits?

  • Reduces waste volume by up to 90%
  • Quiet, compact & odourless operation
  • Easy to clean, easy to operate - no special skills or training required
  • Relatively quick process and available year round (compared to composting)
  • Produces valuable soil amendments that is fully-dry, low in odour and less attractive to wildlife
  • Low emissions compared to direct landfilling (reduced methane production, low power consumption and no transport emissions).

How does it work?

  • Step 1 - Place your food waste into the FoodCycler™  bucket. The FoodCycler™  can take almost any type of food waste, including fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, fish, dairy, bones, shells, pits, coffee grinds & filters, and even paper towels.
  • Step 2 - Place the FoodCycler™  bucket into the FoodCycler™  unit. The FoodCycler™  can be used anywhere with an outlet, such as a kitchen counter top, basement, laundry room, heated garage, etc.
  • Step 3 - Press Start. In 8 hours or less, your food waste will be transformed into soil amendment that can be integrated back into your garden. The cycle runs quietly with no odours or GHG emissions.

The Food Cycler Pilot program requires households that are willing to:

  • Purchase a FoodCycler™ unit
  • Track the number of cycles done over a 12-week period
  • Complete a brief exit survey at the end of the 12-week period
